Physics
Current Studies
I am currently studying physics at the University of Oxford. The physics department website contains information pertaining to the course structure and entry requirements for those who are interested. The Oxford physics course is quite theoretical compared to courses offered at many other British universities. Topics covered in the 2nd year include:
- Quantum mechanics
- Further quantum physics
- Statistical mechanics
- Electromagnetism and optics
It is vital that one have a very sound grounding in quantum mechnaics and quantum physics but also that one have a good understanding of the 'classical' physics such as electromagnetism and classical optics. A good example of this is that many of the predictions of quantum mechanics have been verified by spectroscopy (optical techniques).
There are many books about areas of physics such as quantum mechanics. My favourite text is "Principles of Quantum Mechanics" by R. Shankar. This book covers everything required for the Oxford undergraduate and also covers some material beyond this level.
